Thinking outside the spool

Posted by cottonmillthreadworks on Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

When a spool of thread leaves my booth and goes out into the great big world I usually don't get to see where it ends up. So it's a real treat when customers bring show and tell, and it's especially exciting to see some of these threads being used in different ways.

Rather than use floss for her stitchery, Penny Pierce chose 2 strands of King Tut 40wt. cotton instead:

Because these are both variegated colours she is getting a natural-looking mix that is adding shading and texture to the stitches:

Razzle Dazzle by Ricky Tims is a heavy metallic thread - too heavy to go through the thread path of a machine so it needs to be used in the bobbin. But who ever said that you can't hand embroider with it? Karen McCleary took a pre-marked wholecloth block, a spool of Razzle Dazzle, and embroidered to her heart's content:

Thanks for the great booth sample, Karen!

And for those of you who just love knitting with teensy, tiny needles, here's some inspiration:

Kirsten Cole teaches "Knitting With Beads" at Stitch in Jordan, Ont. and shows gorgeous samples of her work there. The beads are first strung on to the Razzle Dazzle prior to knitting. Once finished, these small gems have an incredible tactile sense to them - everyone just loves holding them! If you're in my booth you can do this, as Kirsten surprised me with my very own little treasure (thank you Kirsten!):

Are the wheels turning yet? I'd love to see what else everybody is doing with their Superior threads!
