Block printing

Posted by cottonmillthreadworks on Monday, October 31st, 2011

While at the Creativ Festival in Toronto recently I had the pleasure of meeting Jamie Malden from the UK, block printer and owner of Colouricious, a company specializing in creative inspiration and education in the textile arts.

Jamie's newsletters, which include an on-line video, are regulars in my mailbox - here's the latest issue. Or follow Colouricious on Facebook.

As humans, we all feel the pull to make our mark on something, and seeing Jamie's samples certainly intrigued me. Not only does she print on fabric, she then uses the pattern for embroidering by hand or machine:

Jamie's enthusiasm was contagious - and really, how hard can block printing be, right? These beautifully carved blocks came home with me:

As well as a few instructional DVD's for watching during the winter:

If you like what you see on her website make a note that she will again be at Creativ in Oct. 2012, where you can take a class with her, or shop in her booth, or be swept away into new projects...

  • It was so exciting being at the Creativ Festival. Everyone was so friendly and enthusiastic and loved the idea of designing their own fabric with wooden printing blocks. Have to just "share the love"! Looking forward to being at the 2012 show which is their 25th anniversary so it should be extra wonderful, if that is possible! Thank you for sharing this.

  • I only found her booth 45 minutes before the show closed on Sun! It was against the very far wall, the last booth I came to!

  • I love the blocks but, unfortunately, missed them completely at the Creative Festival.
